Annual Rummage Sale set for June 15-16

It’s that time of the year again. June 15 and 16 will be the Annual Rummage Sale which is a fundraising activity for the school. Starting this week we encourage you to bring those things you can donate to this cause. At St Silouan’s we will have bins in the basement room adjacent to the bookstore. They will be marked with the category above them. Please distribute your donations accordingly.

This year we are not accepting: mattresses, holiday decorations, underwear, partially used soaps/lotions/make-up, medicine, console TVs.

We do encourage donations of household goods, furniture, decorator items, linens, clothing, sporting goods, area rugs, art work, gardening & tools, children’s clothes, toys & furniture, electronics, books, music, games. Please bring items clean and in good repair.

Students using Spalding Education International’s method scored highest in 4-year reading achievement research study

Spalding’s “The Writing Road to Reading” is one of the cornerstone programs at Saint Basil Academy

A recently completed four-year study by Arizona State University–Technology Based Learning & Research shows students using Spalding Education International’s “The Writing Road to Reading” had significantly higher achievement test scores when compared to those using mainstream reading programs.

The study started in the 2006-2007 school year and concluded with the 2009-2010 school year. It included 11 Arizona schools where an average of 1,000 general education kindergarten through third-grade students participated in each of the four years. Five experimental schools used ” The Writing Road to Reading ” (also referred to as The Spalding Method) and six control schools used one of two mainstream reading programs, published by Harcourt School Publishers or Houghton Mifflin. All students were tested three times annually on Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS).

The report states, “In each administration, Spalding students had consistently higher mean values on all DIBELS areas, which provides evidence that Spalding has been more effective than the methods used in the control schools to teach those reading skills.”

Christmas program!

On Friday December 16th at 6:30 pm the staff and students of St. Basil Academy of Classical Studies will be presenting our annual Christmas program. This year the program will be at the Valley Chapel Road Community Center. The program should last about an hour with light refreshments afterward. Everyone is invited to come.

Save the date! Annual St. Basil dinner and silent auction set for January 19

Set aside the date of Sunday January 29, 2012 for a fun-filled evening!

We are beginning to put together a list of volunteers, auction donors, food donors, etc. Helpers are needed to:

volunteer setting up, cooking, cleaning.
volunteer to help with decorations
volunteer to help organize auction items and set them up prior to the dinner.
contact people regarding possible donations for the auction. Think of people that might donate gift certificates, product, services, art etc. Last year it was amazing how many people could donate when asked.
contact people/organizations that might be able to help with ingredients for the dinner. We will have a more specific menu soon which will narrow down the needs.

Please contact Mary Senter at your convenience and let her know how you would like to help. Last year’s auction was a great success and contributed significantly to meeting funding goals for St. Basil Academy.

Eagerly anticipating the 2011-2012 school year

At Saint Basil Academy, we are looking forward to the new school year, beginning on August 30. Deacon Matthew Harrington will be continuing as headmaster, Subdeacon Raul Lopez-Silva will be joining the staff as a full time teacher, and Laci Cole will be joining as a half time teacher.

Raul is most recently coming from Florida. His son, Silojuan, will be a 7th grader at St Basil’s, and his wife will be joining him in September. She is Japanese, and in Japan currently. Please welcome his family when they arrive.

We are anticipating our largest group of students, with 30 registered. Please continue to pray for the ongoing success of the school, for the staff and students. Thank you for your ongoing prayers, your volunteer efforts and your financial support: it is absolutely vital to the ongoing success of our mission.

Summer science teaching enrichment

Headmaster Matthew Harrington, attended the Summer Institute and Workshop Series for Middle School Science Teachers from June 13-17 at Whitman College.

Father Matthew writes, “What a great week! 5 days with Whitman College science professors and local middle school science teachers. I felt like a kid in a candy store. I am excited for next year and science!”

Giant rummage sale to benefit St Basil’s!

This year’s St Basil Yard Sale will be held Friday & Saturday the 24th & 25th of June in the St Silouan Church parking lot. We look forward to even better results than last year’s sale. Please begin setting aside those items you wish to donate.

Some things that sold well last year:

Clothing items
Children’s clothing, toys, furniture
Wall hangings
Furniture
Misc kitchen/housewares

We will try to advertise items to be included in the sale through the Internet a little bit ahead of time if you will let us know what they are. If you have things that you are unable to store, we have a little bit of storage room set aside. It is not a huge space, so please only consider it as a last resort.

In preparation we are looking for volunteers to participate in many preparatory tasks (painting signs, writing ads, previewing the price sheet). If you have a little time and energy for this worthy cause please let a member of this year’s steering committee know — Matushka Marilyn, Elise Adams or Elizabeth Sturgill.

Student Art Show

The students of St Basil Academy have created and donated artwork which is currently hanging at Walla Walla Roastery.

The artwork will be on display for the month of June, and is for sale. The sale is serving as a fundraiser for St Basil’s.

Thursday evening, June 9, there will be an artist’s reception with light refreshments, from 6:30-8. Please come and meet the artists and share in an evening with the St Basil families.
